Soldering for Virgins ~ "The Bracelet"

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
For Virgins and Not-So-Virgins...a workshop filled
with the basics of soldering from what type of supplies to
use (and why) to the tips and tricks of achievinga smooth and
shiny finish. Discover how to solder 3-dimension objects, unusual shapes and materials, and add those decorative dots. A
special side-bar of glass-cutting by hand and by machine
for those who want to know it all! In this class, we will
make individual charms - each one being different from the
other and including square charms, 3 dimensional charms,
charms using beveled glass, found object charms, bubbles,
double-bubbles, marbles and more. At the end of the day,
we will attach the charms to a bracelet and wear our
artwork proudly! Faux Bracelet Included.

Flower Power

CLASS DESCRIPTION:
The sun is shining! The flowers are blooming! Did I mention the flowers are blooming? Did I mention we are making the flowers? The art of soldering and capturing artful images is changing and is no longer square and one-dimensional. In Flower Power, we will let the inspiration of precious flower petals take our soldered art to a new level.

Students will learn the techniques to create several different styles of flowers along with leaves. Then we will each create one stunning flower that will become the centerpiece to a one-of-a-kind necklace. Special glass-cutting and grinding techniques will be shown as well as decorative soldering embellishments. Whether you have a green thumb, a black thumb, or two left thumbs...this workshop will bring out the garden girl in you in a whole new way!

$160 per student/day

Remember, this is a hands-on TECHNIQUE class. Our time will be spent learning the steps
involved in soldering not only basic charm shapes, but dimensional pieces, bubbles, glass cutting, & attachments.
We will not be creating artwork to put behind the glass, so please come prepared with a variety of artwork (different sizes)
for putting between the glass. Any images should be NON-glossy. Bring dimensional objects
if you desire (ie: buttons, ribbon, etc.) as you will learn the techniques for using those items as well.

SUPPLIES:
As for supplies, I will have soldering equipment that can happily be shared.
However, if you have your own equipment, bring it. This includes:

Soldering Iron
Soldering Iron Stand
Rheostat
Solder
Tips in different sizes

**I will have Flux, Flux Remover, and Sponges to share ... no need for you to travel with it unless you want to solder in your hotel room :) **

For this class, you MUST bring:

Pliers (one Flat-Nose or Chain-Nose, one Bent-Nose, one Round-Nose)
Wire-Cutters (small)
Metal Cookie-Sheet (at least 8x10) * a cheapie is fine, I prefer a non-stick coating)
Scissors
Cutting Pad or Work Surface or Something to cover your table area where you will be working
Hand-Towel (at least one)
Pencil or Pen
Artwork (to put between the glass) in assorted sizes from 1"x1" up to 2"x3" (if you do not have pre-made artwork,
we will just use plain paper since this is a soldering-technique class, not a project class).
A few dimensional objects you would like to learn how to solder
*IMPORTANT - do not use glossy or satin finish images as they will distort under the glass*

DETAILS:

The Workshops will be held in Sally Jean's studio located at:
239 NW 13th Avenue ~ Suite 209 ~ Portland, Oregon 97209
p: 503.227.1650 ~ f: 503.227.1651

The studio is located on the second floor of an old building on the corner of NW 13th & Everett.
Underground parking is available 1-1/2 blocks away (approximately $10/day if in before 10am).
Metered street parking is also available, but the time limits are 1-3 hours.
The studio is within 3 blocks of the Portland Streetcar which is free to ride from downtown
to the Everett Street stop in the Pearl District. The Streetcar also connects with
our rail system, MAX, in downtown. MAX is only free in the downtown area.

The Pearl District offers many wonderful destinations including Powell's City of Books (just 2 blocks
from the studio), Jamison Square (which we call the concrete beach for its "tides" of incoming and
outgoing water), Anthropologie (across from Powell's), Ultrecht (for art supplies) just 2 blocks away,
as well as many eateries and lovely boutiques.

The Pearl District is also 10 blocks from NW 23rd Avenue shopping featuring such classics as
Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware and Williams Sonoma Home in addition to beautiful must-see
boutiques Urbino, Three Monkeys, and Dazzle.

Don't forget that the first Thursday of every month is the First Thursday Art Event!
The Pearl District is alive with late-night gallery cruising, street vendors a-plenty,
and just plain people watching! If you are in town, make it a "must-do"!

For those flying into Portland and renting a car, double-check that your hotel has parking. Also, there is
quite a bit of road construction in the downtown area. For those taking public transportation, MAX

can take you from the airport into downtown Portland where you can connect with the Portland Streetcar.
